The Guangzhou Opera House, known as “the double bubble,” gets its nickname from its design that looks like two small rocks by the Pearl River. Hadid designed the building to fit perfectly with its riverside setting, using curved metal and smooth granite to mimic stones shaped by water on the outside, and wavy walls on the inside that remind visitors of ocean waves. Hadid’s final major project, the Beijing Daxing International Airport, was still under construction when she passed away. Nicknamed the “starfish” for its distinctive shape, the airport features five concourses connected to a central hall, allowing passengers to reach any gate within an 8-minute walk. Hadid also designed a rainwater collection and management system to purify water and prevent flooding.
