The first-ever consignment of American turkey products to India is a landmark development and is a very crucial factor in trade relations between the two countries. The shipment forms part of a move after India agreed over a year ago to cut high tariffs on US turkey products.
US Senator Mark Warner, Virginia, co-chair of the Senate India Caucus hailed this as a historic achievement. This is a tremendous opportunity for Virginia’s poultry producers and a giant leap forward for US-India trade, Warner said. He emphasized the role of this trade expansion in opening new markets for US turkey producers and enhancing global trade.
The shipment is a direct outcome of a trade agreement reached in 2023, during which India agreed to cut retaliatory tariffs on US turkey products. Previously, these tariffs had been a significant barrier, limiting the entry of American poultry into the Indian market. The reduced tariffs are expected to provide expanded access to India’s growing protein market, which is critical for both countries.
Leslee Oden, CEO of the National Turkey Federation, expressed excitement over the opportunity for Indian consumers to experience the high quality of American turkey. He highlighted that US producers have long been committed to providing safe, nutritious, and versatile protein options globally.
For Virginia’s poultry industry, the shipment holds special significance. John King, president of the Virginia Poultry Growers Cooperative, noted that the move will benefit nearly 200 independent turkey grower owners. Similarly, Hobey Bauhan, president of the Virginia Poultry Federation, expressed optimism for strong market returns from India, recognizing the role of this new export opportunity in supporting local farmers.
The shipment reflects the strength of US-India trade relations and underscores both nations’ commitment to diversifying and expanding their food markets.
