Indian Railway plans to drop its project of providing free Wi-Fi to passengers inside the train as it was not cost-effective.

The Union Railway Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw said, internet service was provided in Indian Railway’s Howrah Rajdhani Express train as a pilot project through satellite communication technology, a PTI report said.

The satellite communication technology required high capital in the form of bandwidth charges and thus, the project was not cost-effective, the Union Railway Minister said. She added, the internet availability was unsatisfactory and hence the project was dropped by the transporters.

According to the union railway minister, there is no profitable and suitable technology available to provide Wi-Fi based internet in trains.
