The Journey of a Million Learnings

Mr Hinge’s journey into project management was far from conventional. Despite his casual approach to academics in civil engineering, he found himself thrust into the field due to limited job opportunities upon graduation in the mid-1990s. During this time, the civil engineering sector faced significant challenges, with scarce job prospects and talents in the field being undervalued. Mr Hinge recalls the difficulty of securing a job, with many established companies dismissing fresh graduates like himself as inexperienced and unsuitable for construction sites.

Undeterred by the lack of opportunities, Mr Hinge embarked on his career as a Junior Engineer at a remote site situated between Pune and Mumbai. Despite the hardships posed by the site’s location and the absence of proper facilities, Mr Hinge took on the responsibility of overseeing a sprawling 55-acre civil development project single-handedly. With few senior experts available to guide him, Mr Hinge saw this experience as an opportunity for personal and professional growth. He seized the chance to develop his own techniques for site execution and quality control, honing his skills through hands-on experience and trial and error.

In hindsight, Mr Hinge views his early career challenges as invaluable learning opportunities that shaped his journey in project management. His willingness to embrace adversity and turn it into a catalyst for growth laid the foundation for his future success in the field. From humble beginnings as a construction supervisor in a remote location, Mr Hinge’s journey would eventually lead him to establish himself as a respected figure in the world of project management, with a wealth of experience and expertise to his name.

Mr Hinge’s quest for professional growth led him to seek new opportunities after five years in his previous job. In 2002, he found a promising role at a design engineering firm in Pune, specializing in industrial projects. From the outset, Mr Hinge was fortunate to enjoy autonomy and authority, allowing him to work independently as the project coordinator. Managing a portfolio of 12 industrial projects simultaneously, Mr Hinge gained invaluable experience that bolstered his self-confidence and expertise in civil engineering.

The dynamic nature of his role exposed Mr Hinge to many challenges, each presenting an opportunity for him to devise innovative solutions to complex technical problems. His ability to approach problems from different perspectives, rather than relying on conventional solutions, set him apart and garnered recognition for his resourcefulness. However, Mr Hinge also recognized a fundamental difference between design engineering and on-site supervision services, realizing that each required distinct skill sets and approaches.

To address this disparity, Mr Hinge proposed the creation of a dedicated project management division within the organization, separate from the design engineering services.
