Meesho, the social eCommerce startup, recently announced the layoff of 150 employees from its grocery division. It also intends to merge its grocery business under the Meesho Superstore name as early as May.
After Lido Learning’s widely panned move to fire off over 1,200 staff in late February, this is the latest in a string of layoff announcements from some of India’s leading firms in 2022.
Unlike the previous statements, Meesho appears to be laying off employees not because of a financial problem but rather to remove redundancy as it integrates its supermarket company.
Employees who have been laid off will also receive severance payouts and assistance in finding new jobs, according to Meesho. According to the unicorn, these layoffs will have no impact on Meesho’s core businesses.
Over 2,000 people have been laid off from well-known businesses such as Lido Learning, Trell, Furlenco, Unacademy, and OkCredit in the previous two months.
